Spectacular 1866 Rays Shield Nickel, Premium Gem
1866 5C Rays MS66 PCGS. Ex: Larry Shapiro. A desirable example from the first year of the Shield Nickel series. Only the 1866 and 1867 issues feature rays between the stars on the reverse, which puts additional demand on this date from type collectors. Light rose and yellow patina graces the centers, which contrast nicely against the pale gray margins. Among other die cracks, a circular crack goes through the stars on the reverse, which exhibit minor softness. Otherwise, this piece is decisively struck with captivating luster.
