    Description

1866 Rays Nickel, Faintly Toned MS66
Always Popular as the First-Year of the Type

1866 5C Rays MS66 PCGS. The 1866 is always popular as the first year of production for five cent nickels. The rays motif proved to be a problematic design feature and was eliminated the following year. This particular example lacks the irregular strike often seen as well as the heavy die cracks usually encountered. The satiny surfaces are draped with just the slightest yellow patina on each side. The only striking deficiency is seen in the center of the stars. Population: 32 in 66, 0 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 22NX, PCGS# 3790)
