Description

Nicely Toned 1867 Rays Nickel, MS65

1867 5C Rays MS65 NGC. Despite a significantly lower mintage than the first-year 1866, the 1867 Rays (2 million pieces produced) is not a rare coin in an absolute sense. On the other hand, many examples are plagued by inadequate striking quality and/or poor planchet stock with the result that the quality-conscious buyer will experience quite a bit of difficulty with this issue. Fortunately, we are able to offer a PCGS-certified Gem in this sale. The strike may not be complete, but it is well above average for the type with only a few isolated areas of bluntness toward the central obverse and over the lower reverse stars. Myriad peripheral die cracks are noted on the obverse. Both sides are lightly toned with antique-golden and reddish-tan hues. Desirable and most attractive. Census: 49 in 65, 10 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N2998)
