Description

1867 Shield Nickel, MS65
Rays Variety

1867 5C Rays MS65 NGC. The brilliant, essentially nickel-white surfaces show numerous die cracks on both sides, evidence that those dies saw long service. The reverse die in particular must have shattered soon after this piece was struck, as the area around AMERICA shows about eight radiating cracks, a couple of them heavy. Further attesting to the die overuse is the lack of field-device contrast, which on this coin actually enhances the appearance of a consistent Gem striking. A lovely, interesting survivor. Census: 50 in 65, 10 finer (7/10).(Registry values: N2998)
