Description
1867 Shield Nickel, MS66+
With Rays, CAC
Just One Finer at PCGS
1867 5C Rays MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Just over 2 million Shield
nickels were struck in the second year of production before the
Rays design was abandoned in favor of the simpler and less
stressful (for the dies) No Rays type. The majority of 1867 Shield
nickels are certified in circulation grades, and all Mint State
examples are challenging. This Plus-graded Premium Gem exhibits shimmering, satiny luster beneath a uniform coating of light golden patina. The visual presentation is spectacular and supports the Plus-grade awarded by PCGS. The strike is sharp and even, despite a few peripheral die cracks on the right side of the obverse that serve as an early indication of problems to come. Minor strike doubling appears on the date and the left side of the wreath. CAC has endorsed the quality for the grade, and PCGS and NGC both report only one numerically finer example (3/26).
