Description

1879 Shield Nickel, MS65
Low Mintage, Finer Pieces Are Scarce

1879 5C MS65 PCGS. Prior to the proof-only issues 1877 and 1878, the 1874 to 1876 Shield nickel production averaged about 2.7 million nickels per annum. The dramatic drop to just 25,900 pieces in 1879, most which were distributed for circulation, has left high-end Mint State examples conditionally rare. This surviving Gem is well-struck on luminous silver-nickel surfaces that deliver a fantastic cartwheel effect. Only a few minor fly specks and tiny nicks are visible under a loupe and define the grade. The 5 on the reverse shows faint tones of light-amber that add to the pleasing eye appeal. PCGS shows only 123 pieces in Mint State, and from those only 36 coins are numerically finer than the present example (7/25). Housed in a PCGS green label Generation 3.1 holder.(Registry values: N1793)
