1881 5C MS64 PCGS. The 1879, 1880, and 1881 Shield nickels are rarities in circulation strike format, while each date is common in proof. The 1881 is the least rare of that trio but still in great demand. This pleasing near-Gem is sharply struck with dusky gold toning over its satin luster. Population: 30 in 64, 67 finer (9/19).Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2012), lot 3250.
