Description

1882 Shield Nickel, MS67+
Exceptionally Toned, CAC
Tied for Finest Certified

1882 5C MS67+ PCGS. CAC. The 1882 Shield nickel is significant in that the issue quietly signaled an end to the lingering hoarding tendencies adopted during the Civil War. After fractional currency notes were retired in 1876, massive amounts of smaller coinage re-entered commerce. The need for large quantities of new nickels did not surface until 1882, when just over 11.47 million Shield nickels were ordered. Oddly, as the Mint struck the large 1882 issue, the design for the new Liberty head nickel was being introduced, and the Shield design was retired after the following year.
This intensely lustrous Superb Gem blends pastel hues of peach, emerald, powder-blue and rose that yield a dynamic cartwheel effect, easily earning the Plus-grade designation. Sharply struck design elements on pristine fields are joined by an array of peripheral die cracks, indicative of a later die state. PCGS and NGC combined report only 19 Superb Gems from 1882, and this piece is tied as the finest known with only one other coin at MS67+ (3/26).
