Description
British Administration Cent 1791, KM1 (29mm), PR64 BN NGC, crisp strike and exceptionally choice, lovely brown bronze surfaces. A classic from the British "Lion Mountain" colony on the Ivory Coast of Africa, which for about two centuries was a British/Portuguese slave-trading center, then in 1787 a freedown-town was established at the port, soon named Freetown, under control of a London trading company, The Sierra Leone company, issuer of these delightful pieces, which organization welcomed ex slaves for cheap labor, and then in 1807 when Great Britain abolished the slave trade the "nation" was born, yet it remained under British administration until it became a commonwealth in 1961. During World War II, it was an important spy station for the British campaigns in Africa. These wonderfully engraved and symbolic coins, many struck as proofs for collectors in the British homeland, have always been popular.Metal: Bronze
