Description

British Colony copper Proof Dollar 1791 XF Details (Scratches) NGC FT1B, KM7a. From the collector: "An example struck in copper. Probably a late striking from worn dies.  Not attractive, but extremely rare. Normal circulation-strike Sierra Leone dollars were produced in silver, and so while this piece does not necessarily look it at first, it can rightfully be called a proof, or at the very least a specimen, striking. It would seem that many of the 1791 proof copper dollars come in pretty beat up condition; the Arielle Collection example (Baldwin's 85, lot 3251) noted that there were "some abrasion marks" on the coin, and yet it still hammered at 1,600 GBP (or $2,571 at the time). As the collector himself notes, this coin isn't particularly attractive, but it is still extremely rare and an important piece in the Sierra Leone series.
