Description

British Colony gilt-copper Proof Dollar 1791 PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC, FT1C, KM7b. From the collector: "A proof in copper gilt. Ex Capt. H.E.G. Paget, H.M. Lingford and R.J. Ford collections. These Sierra Leone Company copper gilt proofs are all excessively rare and were intended as special presentation pieces.  Randy Weir estimated that no more than two or three gilt proofs were struck for any one denomination. The manufacturing practice of forming a 22ct. Gold plate over a copper blank using the mercuric gilding technique was time consuming, expensive and dangerous. An operative could only create a small number of pieces in a day to avoid being overcome by the dangerous fumes and developing the 'shakes' or worse. The Government eventually outlawed the procedure."

Extremely rare, and the first time a Sierra Leone gilt-copper Dollar has been offered for public sale in over a decade. For comparison's sake, there have been at least three examples of the similarly sized gilt 100 Cents piece that have been offered. Wonderfully reflective surfaces with a stark cameo contrast with the devices. An important opportunity for the world crown collector!

Metal: Copper Gilt
