Description

Bronze "slave trade abolished" token or medal 1807, Vice-2 (most likely: restrike, not original), PR66 BN NGC, a nearly flawless and deeply mirrored piece having essentially perfect chocolate-brown color and surfaces. David Vice says (page 219 of his Coinage of British West Africa) that the obverse die showing the abolishment scene was engraved by one G.F. Pidgeon, while the Arabic side was cut by John Philip, and that the pieces made not in proof state were intended to circulate at trading establishments in Sierra Leone. Britain outlawed the slave trade in 1807 and the following year took over this territory from the Sierra Leone Company of London. This interesting and historic piece thereby marks a sea change for the colony. Most desirable!
