Description

1964 SMS Nickel, SP67+ Full Steps
Distinctive Satin Finish Rarity

1964 5C SMS SP67+ Full Steps PCGS. The satin finish is readily observed on this high-end Superb Gem, complementing a delicate tinge of light champagne toning over the sharp devices and flawless fields. PCGS designates this a Special Mint Set coin, although the five-coin sets of satin finish 1964 coinage that surfaced in the early 1990s are not known to have ever been in any special packaging from the Mint, and official coinage of Special Mint Sets did not occur until 1965. The SMS 1964 Jefferson nickel is rare. PCGS reports only 19 submissions for all grades combined, including likely duplication. This is the only Plus-designated Full Steps coin at PCGS. Population: 6 in 67 (1 in 67+) Cameo, 7 finer (3/19).
From a complete five-piece set of 1964 SMS coinage, cent through half dollar, offered in this sale as individual lots.(Registry values: P1)
