Description
Remarkable 1965 SMS Kennedy Half
MS67 Ultra Cameo, Most Elusive of the
1965-67 Special Mint Set Issues
1965 50C SMS MS67 Ultra Cameo NGC. The 1965 through 1967
Special Mint Sets were a compromise that pleased no one. Collectors
missed their glassy, brilliant-white proof coins that they had
become accustomed to--and Mint Bureau personnel would just as soon
have not produced any silver (even 40%) coins at all, as some
Washington politicos were thoroughly convinced that "demon
hoarders" caused the mid-1960s silver coin shortage, when the true
sources were much more complex. Most 1965-67 SMS Kennedy halves lack much in the way of field-device contrast, but this piece is a remarkable exception. This Superb Gem Ultra Cameo 1965 SMS coin has such high white-on-black contrast that it nearly resembles a true proof, and its desirability is further enhanced by its status as the most difficult of the three 40% silver issues to find at the Ultra Cameo/Deep Cameo designation. The surfaces are essentially mark-free. Census: 21 in 67 Ultra Cameo, 0 finer (10/10).(Registry values: N491)
