Elusive 1967 SMS Kennedy, MS68 Deep Cameo

1967 50C SMS MS68 Deep Cameo PCGS. A true prize for the Kennedy half Registry Set collector, the present 1967 SMS, certified MS68 Deep Cameo by PCGS, is one of only a half-dozen pieces so graded at that service. Most examples are likely held in extremely strong hands, as the competition is keen among this group of collectors, and such prizes appearing in the various auction venues are rapidly and eagerly snatched up.
While the 1967 SMS and its counterparts are readily available for a price up through the MS68 level, it is with Cameo or Deep Cameo contrast that they show their true rarity--a trait they also share with the celebrated 90% silver 1964 proof Kennedys. This 1967 SMS example offers no-questions, deeply mirrored black-on-white contrast, almost appearing to be a true proof, and the lack of mentionable contact more than justifies the grade. In recognition of the rarity of Deep Cameo examples, PCGS awards them a three-point bonus in the 192-coin "long set," the Kennedy Half Dollars Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1964-Present) collection--effectively making this coin an MS71!
