Description

1964 SMS Washington Quarter, SP67
Enigmatic Rarity

1964 25C SMS SP67 PCGS. In the early 1990s, a small group of 1964 SMS coins came to light and was dispersed into the market. Previously unknown to numismatists, these odd-ball coins came to be known as prototype strikes for the mass Special Mint Set production to occur from 1965 through 1967. The coins are defined today by their exceptionally sharp strikes and satiny finish -- both distinct from norms for circulation-strike 1964 coinage. When Stack's originally sold the 1964 SMS sets in the 1990s, it was discovered that many of the sets contained normal business-strike half dollars where the rest of the coins were of the special finish. Thus, 1964 SMS quarters and below denominations are slightly more accessible than the rare half dollars -- but not by much. A greater discussion of the 1964 SMS coinage can be found in the description of the 1964 SMS Kennedy half dollar in this same auction.

The present Superb Gem quarter displays faint traces of champagne and lilac toning across otherwise ivory-white surfaces. It is notably devoid of abrasions, and the distinct satin luster is both mellow and luminous. The sharpness prevailing throughout is exceptional. Note: A complete set of 1964 SMS coins (cent through half dollar) is offered in individual lots in this auction.(Registry values: P1)
