Description
Very Rare 1904 Roosevelt HK-308 Dollar, PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC
1904 Roosevelt So-Called Dollar, PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC. HK-308. Silver, 38 mm. The 2nd edition of the Hibler-Kappen reference on so-called dollars (2008) provides a rarity rating of R.7 for this issue, which translates to 11 to 20 known on their modified scale. For obvious reasons, the Roosevelt dollar is missing from most collections. As of (7/08), the NGC Census Report documents one example at the PR62 level and another in PR63. Interestingly, the current offering is absent from the population data, perhaps due to a typographical error. A review of our auction archives reveals that Heritage has sold only two HK-308 so-called dollars in the past--a PR62 NGC example and a PR63 Cameo NGC coin, the latter of which is also absent from the Census Report. The coin presented here is the finest that we have been able to identify--certified or otherwise. Amber-gold coloration throughout is accentuated by gentle swaths of electric-blue toning when rotated under a light source. An abrasion on the obverse rim at 8 o'clock precludes an even higher grade.Auction Info
