Rare 1946 U.N. Monetary Pattern
MS61, HK-873F, Aluminum
One of Three Pieces Minted

1946 U.N. Monetary Pattern, HK-873F, R.9, MS61 NGC. Aluminum. The 2nd edition of the Hibler-Kappen So-Called Dollars reference (2008), in discussing the United Nations Monetary Patterns, points out that Abe Kosoff and Hans Schulman conceived the idea for an international coinage when the United Nations was formed. Their thinking was that if all nations had a common currency (in addition to a common language), they could work together in greater harmony. A pattern was designed, using Kosoff's suggestion of a Four Freedom's reverse. Medallic Art Co., New York, struck the medals in several different compositions.
According to Medallic Art records, three pieces, including the present MS61 example, were struck in aluminum. Luminous surfaces are essentially untoned on the obverse, while the reverse displays splashes of light tan-gold color. The design elements are all well defined. A few wispy handling marks define the grade.
