Description

Astounding Specimen 1929 Sovereign Ex. The Bentley Collection

George V gold Specimen Sovereign 1929-SA SP64 NGC, Pretoria mint, KM-A22, S-4005. An unusual and clearly superior selection in terms of strike and overall presentation. With a touch Prooflike appearance to reverse lower-lying fields whereas the obverse open expanses are remarkably satiny, rendering a reverse proof-like contrast to the King's bust. Enviably crisp in execution and described as unique by Baldwin's cataloguer, who further suggested this piece was struck to mark the start of the 'small head' design from this year on at the Pretoria mint. Accordingly, the coin at hand is the sole example with this designation at NGC and with the accompanying pedigree certainly forms a most intriguing target for any Sovereign aficionado.
