Description

The Extremely Rare Proof Set of 1939

George VI "Short" Proof Set 1939, 8 pieces, KM-PS14, Hern-P15, only 30 sets minted, graded by NGC as follows: bronze 1/4 Penny (Farthing) PR66 BN, 1/2 Penny PR62 BN, Penny PR65 BN, silver 3 Pence PR64, 6 Pence PR64 Cameo, Shilling PR63, 2 Shillings PR63, and 2 1/2 Shillings PR63. The bronzes are all a uniform, beautiful dark mahogany brown in color. The brilliant silver has reflective mirror surfaces with some lightly speckled toning. This is an extremely rare pre-war set and as Hern says "Probably the most underrated set in the South African series. Both the 1/- and the 6d. are only available in the Proof set and are 4 times as rare as the 1931 3d. and twice as rare as the 1931 1/2D. Seldom is a set offered for sale." We can trace only one other set in recent auction history worldwide, an uncertified set which sold in Spink's sale #6032, November 2006 (lot 933), at £9,000 hammer. More than five years have elapsed since that sale, which occurred before this coinage began its recent price escalation. A major opportunity for any advanced collector.
