Crackling "Sammy Marks Tickey" 3 Pence

Republic gold Pattern "Tickey" 3 Pence 1898 MS63 NGC, Pretoria mint, KM-PnA23, Hern-ZP5. 2.63gm. A fascinating South African type offered in an enviable level of preservation. Struck from a miniscule mintage of just 215 pieces by famed South African industrialist and financier Sammy Marks after being given the reigns to the Pretoria mint. What would ultimately become the iconic "Tickey" 3 Pence, this one-day issue's sole purpose appears to be for presentation to the businessman's family and friends, which included President Kruger himself. Because of their status as more of a souvenir or memento than a true Pattern, many of these would make their way into jewelry, accounting for the amount of details-graded examples extant. This pieces lacks all the common grade qualifiers, while abounding in eye appeal. Semi-reflective fields are graced by a coppery, decades-old patina that well frames the fully-engraved motifs. A rarity in any grade, even more coveted when found this nice.
