Description

A Gorgeous Red Proof Penny of 1892

Republic Proof Penny 1892, KM2, Hern-Z1 (est. 20 struck), PR65 RB NGC, a glowing lavender-red Gem Proof. Hern states that "USA graded coins need to be certified by South African experts!" (the exclamation point is his) . . . but who could question this NGC-certified coin, with its mirrored fields having the orange-peel texture that is found only on proofs, the fully struck portrait and fully struck details in the reverse shield (even the tiniest elements of the design are visible), the squared-off lettering and digits, the crisply struck elongated beading around the knife-blade-sharp rims, as well as the reflective plain edge? A truly beautiful and absolutely authentic example of this rarity, surely among the finest known -- in all, a superb classic coin from this formative period in South Africa's turbulent history.
