Description

Republic silver "Pretoria-Delagoa Bay Railway" Medal 1895-Dated MS60 NGC, KM-Unl., Hern-22. 32mm. A popular commemorative medal, struck using a obverse die from a 2-1/2 shillings by Otto Schultz, with a reverse that commemorates the opening of the Delagoa Bay railway by Paul Kruger in July of 1895. The grade stems from copious handling marks, evenly distributed on both sides of the coin.

The establishment of the railway line connecting Pretoria and Delagoa Bay heralded crucial changes, empowering the erstwhile land-enclosed Transvaal Republic to operate independently from British Colonies in Natal and the Cape. Upon its completion, the railway line expedited travel, vastly enhancing the safety and profitability of the journey. A frequently sought after issue, minted in commemorative quality.
