Description

Significant Flanders Gulden from Charles Quint

Flanders. Charles V Gulden (Florin Karolus d'argent) ND (1549-1552) XF45 NGC, Bruges mint, Delm-4 (R3), GH-187-5. A prohibitively rare emission from Charles V, a King of many different titles including Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke of Austria, and Lord of the Netherlands. There are two types of this larger silver emission that opens Delmonte's reference "Le Benelux D'Argent", this first type featuring the reverse Austria-Burgundy cross that cuts through the legends. The most relatively common issue for this type is the Brabant production, which accounts for the bulk of the past auction appearances. However, this Flanders issue is much more rare based on our scan of past auction records, being the first of its kind to surface at auction in internet history. The condition of this piece does ample justice to its rarity, with only mild wear and a nice, old-time silver patina with gunmetal-blue accents. We are excited to usher this important offering across the auction block to an awaiting public eager for an opportunity to acquire such a fleeting emission.
