Description

1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS62
Brilliant Full Head Example

1916 25C MS62 Full Head PCGS. The Standing Liberty quarter design was in a constant state of change from April 1916 well into 1917. Counting original models submitted by Hermon MacNeil, bronze casts, plaster models, struck patterns, and commercial coinage design changes, a minimum of seven distinct variations of the design existed at one point or another, not counting minor tweaks made to several of them. The 1916-dated coins struck to the tune of 52,000 pieces intended for circulation, was still two revisions behind the final version of MacNeil's work. Following the 1916 coinage, the entire obverse was remodeled to bring up the details of the figure and shield better, but Liberty's undraped breast remained an element of the work. Then, in early 1917, George Morgan and MacNeil completely revised the design again, remodeling the figure and raising the eagle in the reverse field.

This example of the 1916 issue shows what is Full Head sharpness for the 1916 design, but the strands are minute compared to what is seen on the 1917 Type One issue. Moreover, general softness in the modeling of Liberty is a product of the dies, not strike sharpness. The coin is brilliant and satiny, with minor abrasions that limit the grade.(Registry values: N4719)
