Scarce 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS63 Full Head

1916 25C MS63 Full Head PCGS. Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty design is acclaimed as one of the most artistic U.S. coins. With a series-low mintage of 52,000 pieces, and as the first year of the type, the 1916 quarter is in demand in all grades. MacNeil's original style lasted just two years before exposed Liberty was covered with a coat of chain mail, though there is debate about whether the change was made primarily to cover the partial nudity. This coin is a lustrous example with no significant abrasions or spots. Though there is typical softness in the feathers on the eagle's left wing and breast and in the rivets and stripes of the shield, sufficient detail remains in Liberty's helmet for the coin to be certified as a Full Head example. Muted silver-gray patina on both sides and a few darker pinkish-gold highlights near the rim combine to produce a pleasing example of this popular early 20th century type.(Registry values: N4719)
