Description
Famous 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter
Select Mint State
1916 25C MS63 PCGS. On first judgment, Hermon MacNeil's
design for the obverse of the Standing Liberty quarter was the only
one accepted, with the prolific Adolph Weinman granted the reverse
for that denomination; MacNeil was "awarded one-half design out of
a possible three designs," as written by then-Mint Director Robert
Woolley and quoted in Roger W. Burdette's Renaissance of
American Coinage 1916-1921.Later negotiations, however, also gave MacNeil the reverse design. These negotiations and other delays led to the extremely limited striking of the first-year 1916 issue, just 52,000 pieces. This Select coin is softly struck but beautifully lustrous with slightly textured surfaces in pale silver-gray. The overall eye appeal is impressive for the grade.(Registry values: N2998)
