Description

1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS63
Original Russet Toning

1916 25C MS63 PCGS. The Standing Liberty quarter design produced at the end of 1916 was a reversion toward Hermon MacNeil's original models instead of the revised designs the sculptor had more recently provided the Mint. However, the Mint's version of the models depicted Liberty with significantly lower relief than MacNeil's original design, with the figure's details appearing somewhat "mushy" by comparison. Even Full Head coins have this appearance, such that many collectors are just as happy with a non-Full Head coin as a Full Head piece.
This Select example displays satiny mint luster with light golden interiors framed by russet and blue-green border toning. Liberty's temple is weak as usual, but the remainder of the design is well struck with no overt softness that is not present on every example. Grade-limiting abrasions are minor and unobtrusive.
