1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS63
An Outstanding, High-End Example
1916 25C MS63 PCGS. The 1916 Standing Liberty quarter and
1909-S VDB cent are renowned, low-mintage first-year keys in their
respective series. But unlike the much-heralded, long-anticipated,
and widely hoarded 1909-S VDB, the 1916 quarters slipped quietly
into circulation in January 1917, along with a much-larger batch of
1917 Type One quarters from Philadelphia. It is important to note
that only 52,000 quarters were minted, compared to 484,000 pieces
of the S VDB--a mintage nine times smaller. The collecting
public seems to have caught on quickly, however, and snatched up
many examples; however, most are in circulated condition,
especially the lower circulated grades. This is a splendid coin
whose thick mint frost glows through the light golden and lilac
toning. Curiously, all the design elements except Liberty's head
are fully brought up. An outstanding example of this rare,
first-year issue. Housed in a first-generation holder, the insert
reads 1916 but the PCGS number is 5706, which is the number for a
1917.(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 242Y, PCGS# 5704, GSID# 5533)
