Lustrous 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS64
1916 25C MS64 PCGS. A wonderful example of the rare and famous 1916 Standing Liberty quarter, this example has intermingled pale gray and champagne toning over both surfaces. Although shy of a full strike, the design features are sharper than usually encountered. Only 52,000 quarters of this design were minted in the transitional year, representing the first appearance of the new design by Hermon MacNeil. Over the next several years, the design was twice modified. The 1917 modification presented a more respectable Ms. Liberty, and changed the reverse layout. The Type One coins of 1916 and 1917 had seven stars left of the eagle and six right. Type Two coins of 1917 to 1930 had five stars on each side of the eagle and three below. A more subtle modification took place in 1925, when the date was recessed in its pedestal to avoid quickly disappearing through limited circulation.(Registry values: N4719)
