1916 Standing Liberty Quarter
Brilliant MS65 Full Head

1916 25C MS65 Full Head PCGS. Despite a number of design changes and delays throughout much of 1916, the Standing Liberty quarter produced in December 1916 represents a return toward Hermon MacNeil's original models submitted many months before. However, the obverse design mass produced shows Liberty in lower relief than MacNeil's models, especially on the head and shield, and on the flanking stars of the walls, which are mushy on the production design.

While this modified version of MacNeil's original design was used for coinage in 1916, the Mint Director requested that the design be sharpened and several aspects strengthened for the 1917 dies. Thus, while most numismatic reference books lump the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter in with the first 1917 coins as the Type One design, that design is different on the 1916 coin than it is on the 1917.

This Gem Full Head piece displays as sharp a strike as possible for the 1916 obverse, with vibrant, brilliant mint luster throughout each side. Only a few small marks prevent an even finer grade. Population: 94 in 65 (7 in 65+) Full Head, 34 finer (6/25).(Registry values: N4719)
