1916 Full Head MS66 Standing Liberty Quarter
Ex: Richmond Collection

1916 25C MS66 Full Head NGC. Ex: Richmond Collection. This Premium Gem Full Head first-year key-date 1916 quarter is virtually in the finest quality obtainable in the numismatic marketplace. The current population of 1916 Standing Liberty quarters certified MS66 Full Head is 17 coins at NGC, with three finer, and 11 at PCGS, with four finer (9/13) -- and it is likely that any higher-grade pieces are held in strong hands, indeed, as the Registry Set phenomenon shows no slackening in popularity.

The surfaces of this coin are silver-white, without so much as a hint of discernible color. The texture is deeply frosted, with incredible luster emanating from both sides. As expected of the grade, there is virtually no sign of visible contact, save for a single nick in the belly of the eagle. The head details are full as defined within the context of the issue, and even more remarkably, most of the shield rivets and lines are in place.

It was not only gold, but the minor denominations of silver and copper, that saw the noted coinage renaissance of American numismatic researcher Roger Burdette. First came the Lincoln cent of Victor D. Brenner replacing the Indian cent, followed four years later by James Earle Fraser's Buffalo nickel replacing the Liberty Head nickel. The reinvigoration of the minor coinage concluded in 1916 with the near-simultaneous launches of the Mercury dime and Walking Liberty half dollar designs of A.A. Weinman, and the introduction of Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty design.
