1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS66
Luminous Surfaces, Pale Pastel Toning

1916 25C MS66 PCGS. CAC. While there are few champions of Chief Engraver Charles Barber, especially among those who recall the running battle between him and Augustus Saint-Gaudens and his heirs in 1907, most numismatists would feel at least a degree of sympathy for him for what he went through in 1915 and 1916, having to watch as his coinage designs were replaced. That would be bad enough, but as Roger W. Burdette notes in Renaissance of American Coinage 1916-1921, the circumstances were particularly cruel. After consulting with a trio of outside artists, Mint Director Robert Woolley sent a letter to Philadelphia Mint Superintendent Adam Joyce, reprinted by Burdette, which reads in part:

"Please introduce [the artists] to Mr. Barber and request him to give them all possible information regarding the practical side of coin designing. I have assured them that all inquiries will be cheerfully responded to, and that in their efforts to create the best possible design they will receive from Mr. Barber and others at the Philadelphia Mint at all times hearty co-operation."

The final twist of the knife, in Burdette's words: "When Superintendent Joyce received the letter the next day, he showed it to the senior staff and had the Engraver, Charles Barber, read and initial the letter."

One of those replacements was the Standing Liberty quarter, which saw a limited mintage of 52,000 pieces in 1916. Very few examples were set aside in such superlative condition as this piece. The mint luster is positively radiant, and each side has just the slightest hint of pastel iridescence. Outstanding quality in this rare and popular first-year issue.(Registry values: N7079)
