1918 Quarter, MS68 Full Head
Tied for Finest Certified
Sole Finest With CAC Approval
Ex: Just Having Fun

1918 25C MS68 Full Head PCGS. CAC. Ex: Just Having Fun. Offered here is perhaps the single most famous 1918 Standing Liberty quarter example known, and a coin tied with one other for the finest certified. The Pizza Collection specimen previously appeared in the Just Having Fun Collection, which still ranks as the all-time finest PCGS Registry Set of Standing Liberty quarters, and before that it appeared in our own Baltimore Signature back in July of 2003. Thus, its status at the top of the known Condition Census has endured for more than two decades. There is but one other coin that rivals it, that being a second MS68 Full Head PCGS piece that currently resides in a top Registry Set, but that piece lacks CAC endorsement. The Pizza Collection coin offered here is CAC endorsed; thus, most collectors would consider this to be the finer of the two top-grade examples, and thus the finest known 1918 Standing Liberty quarter.
The PCGS Condition Census of Full Head coins consists of two MS68s, a lone MS67+, and a group of MS67s trailing behind. NGC reports no Full Head coins as fine as MS68 and lists two MS67+ pieces and four MS67s. Among non-Full Head pieces, NGC lists two MS68s, while the finest at PCGS is an MS67+ (3/26). These figures clearly affirm the Just Having Fun-Pizza Collection 1918 as one of the two finest known 1918 quarters not only in Full Head, but overall. Moreover, it is the only one of the two MS68 Full Head pieces to have appeared at public auction. It is fitting that a collection as advanced as The Pizza Collection should include this remarkable coin, and we anticipate the coin's next owner will place it within the next top-tier Registry Set to anchor the Standing Liberty series.
The remarkable coin is characterized by a distinct combination of nearly flawless preservation, early die state sharpness and luster, and beautiful old-time iridescent toning. That preservation means a flawless leg on Liberty, flawless fields, and essentially as-struck surface quality. That sharpness and luster means the obverse of this coin is distinctly crisp, with a bold shield, stars, and hairline, while just barely lacking full definition at Liberty's temple and on the date numerals. On the reverse, the luster speaks to a slightly later die state but nonetheless complements a bold strike on the eagle and stars. And that old-time toning manifests itself in lovely iridescence throughout with small daubs of olive-russet in the margins that serve as ready pedigree markers. This is a coin that simply begs the viewer to sit and admire it. This cataloger envies the winning bidder. PCGS Population: 2 in 68, 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 68, 0 finer (3/26).
