Description

1918/7-S Quarter, MS64 Full Head
High Condition Census Rarity

1918/7-S 25C FS-101 MS64 Full Head PCGS. The overdate, first publicly documented in a 1937 Barney Bluestone auction, ranks among the top key issues in the Standing Liberty quarter series. In terms of absolute scarcity, it is the top key. In Gem and better grades, it is the rarest even in non-Full Head. And in Full Head grades, it is surpassed in absolute rarity only by the 1927-S. Though, while the 1927-S is slightly rarer in Full Head overall, the overdate is the rarest Full Head coin in high grade. Several 1927-S coins exist in Gem Full Head or better. But the finest overdates in Full Head are a pair of coins in MS64+ Full Head. In total, we have documented only 13 1918/7-S quarters in MS63 or finer Full Head. While a few additional examples in these grades may yet come to light, the overdate stands as one of the two most elusive issues in the series in attractive Full Head condition. And that distinction is unlikely to change.
The current coin is tied with six other MS64 Full Head coins as second finest known. We have not found a prior auction appearance for this piece, though we consider it an attractive example within the MS64 Full Head group due to its distinctive satin luster that yields an old-time "skin" that glints when tilted in-hand. Some chestnut toning over the high points of each side further attests to the originality, while the balance of the luster is ivory-silver. The coin shows the usual die clashing and lapping, but without any significant abrasions to detract from the eye appeal. Furthermore, Liberty's head is as sharp as it comes, surpassing in sharpness several other high-grade Full Head coins we have seen. The date is bold as well. The shield rivets and the leading edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing exhibit the usual strike softness. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
Several of the Condition Census Full Head 1918/7-S quarters have not been seen at auction in many years, while a few have traded hands on several occasions. The two finest pieces -- those Plus-graded by PCGS -- have either never appeared at auction or last appeared six years ago. The opportunity of the present coin to the advanced Registry collector cannot be overstated, especially when it is considered that most of the current high-ranking PCGS Registry Sets lack a Full Head example of the overdate.
