Description

Pleasing 1918/7-S Quarter, MS64

1918/7-S 25C MS64 PCGS. FS-101, formerly FS-008.5. The small die chip above the pedestal to the left of the lowest star on the right confirms the authenticity of this popular and rare overdate variety. According to Walter Breen (1988), this variety was first noticed in 1937. The first known auction appearance was in the Barney Bluestone sale on December 4, 1937 (lot 741).
Relatively few Mint State pieces are known, as evident from PCGS/NGC figures. The two services have certified a little more than 100 Uncirculated specimens, mostly in the MS62 to MS64 range.
The mint luster is very pleasing and frosted, and both sides are lightly toned in soft greenish-gold and violet hues. The striking details are a little less than complete, as usual, but the definition on Liberty's head only lacks the ear hole for Full Head status. Generally well preserved and yielding pleasing eye appeal. Population: 18 in 64, 5 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N7079)
