Description
Rare 1918/7-S Quarter, MS 63 PCGS
1918/7-S MS 63 PCGS. Overdate quarters are among the rarest coins of the 20th century for two reasons. First, they were struck from a single pair of dies, thus drastically limiting their availability in terms of absolute numbers available. Second, the overdate feature was not discovered until 1937, twenty years after the date's release into circulation. This second factor explains the conditional rarity of the overdate in mint condition. The available mint state pieces known today by definition had to be pulled from rolls originally set aside in 1918 or as single pieces placed in collections between 1918 and '37.This is a well preserved example that has a prominent underdigit that is plainly visible to the unaided eye. The surfaces are satiny and generally untoned with a light trimming of golden patina over each side. Softly struck on the highpoints, as always, with about half of the head detail present. A couple of barely visible, parallel slide marks are noted on the right side of the obverse, these being the only marks we see that can be used to trace the pedigree of this important coin.
