1918-D 25C MS67 Full Head PCGS....
Description
1918-D Quarter, MS67 Full Head
Tied Finest Full Head Example
Famous Just Having Fun Example
1918-D 25C MS67 Full Head PCGS. Ex: Just Having Fun. Satiny
luster billows over delicate light-silver surfaces. Both sides
contain faint hints of dappled russet-brown sprinkled throughout
both sides, which is most prevalent in the right obverse field and
left reverse field. This creates attractive texture in a hue
admired by collectors of many silver coin series. As is expected at
the Superb Gem level, abrasions of any severity are nowhere to be
found, even after a thorough investigation is conducted. The 1918-D is a scarce issue in Full Head, and only one in five certifications across both services have achieved the designation. However, grading service standards are occasionally lax compared to what the student of the series might accept as Full Head, and many Full Head examples will not pass muster. The present offering excels in the sharpness of the head detail, including bold leaves and a strong hairline. Elsewhere, the shield lines and the read-and-bead around the border are sharp, while the shield rivets and the leading edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing exhibit typical incompleteness. The 1918-D is notorious for a weak central strike even on Full Head coins, though this example is far above average and a delight to admire.
The Big Sky Collection presents in this coin yet another former Just Having Fun specimen. It is remarkable that more than a decade after that Registry Set traded at auction, the individual coins remain among the finest, if the finest, examples of each date known. The current 1918-D still ranks at the top of the Condition Census, where it is tied with merely three other PCGS coins and none at NGC (3/26). These top-tier coins rarely appear at auction. We have previously handled such a piece on only two prior occasions: first in 2017, and most recently in 2021 with the Simpson specimen. The Just Having Fun, now Big Sky Collection specimen, has not been available for 13 years. PCGS Population: 4 in 67, 0 finer (3/26).
