Description
Bold 1918-S Quarter, MS65 Full Head
1918-S 25C MS65 Full Head PCGS. CAC. J.H. Cline estimates that perhaps only 3% of the original mintage of 1918-S quarters were struck with full heads. It is true that today the issue is extremely elusive in certified Gem Full Head, where PCGS has graded 29 with six finer, and NGC 13 with four finer (6/08). This coin shows the minimum required criteria for Full Head, namely a bold ear hole, three complete and separate greenery sprigs showing, and complete separation of the hairline and head all the way to the neck. There is a small planchet defect nearby, appearing as a dent on Liberty's cheek and likely as struck. The strike is bold elsewhere, with nearly full shield rivets and chain mail on Liberty's bodice. The lustrous surfaces are primarily silver, with glints of amber-brown near the lower rim on each side. A bold die crack runs nearly horizontally through the date digits.
