Incredible 1919 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS68 FH
1919 25C MS68 Full Head NGC. In his reference on Standing Liberty quarters, J.H. Cline provides the diagnostics of full head examples. For the Type Two design, he requires the following: "a distinct line of separation of the hair from the temple, the cheekbone, and the throat area. It will also have an indentation, or hole, in the hair in the area of the ear. The three olive leaves will be complete down to the connecting point and perhaps raised in some very early strikes."This Superb Gem is a coin that will be appreciated by the connoisseur, with its original frosty luster and brilliant silver surfaces. Only the faintest champagne toning can be seen on either side. The head details meet the requirements of author Cline, and the balance of the design details are also fully defined with the sole exception of two indistinct rivets on the shield. Although NGC has certified a single finer example of this date, this piece should be fine enough to satisfy even the most fastidious collector.
Although the 1919 quarter is considered the best produced Standing Liberty quarter in the series, this is the first time we have offered an example that grades finer than MS67 Full Head. Even at the MS67 Full Head grade level, we have only offered a few examples over the last 14 years, per our auction archives. We have only offered an MS67 Full Head three times out of a total of 54 Full Head examples that have appeared in our signature sales since 1993.
