Description

1919-D Quarter, MS65+ Full Head
Rare This Sharp

1919-D 25C MS65+ Full Head PCGS. The Denver Mint's struggle to produce consistently sharp strikes on Standing Liberty quarters in 1918 seemed to only grow the following year. The 1919-D, in addition to being a series semikey overall, is the second-rarest Denver issue in the series in Full Head grades. Only the legendary strike rarity, the 1926-D, is seen less often with a Full Head designation.

In Full Head, the 1919-D is most often encountered in MS62 to MS64 grades, and the present Plus-graded Gem is a significant rarity. We have handled only five Gem Full Head examples of this date within the last decade, and just two finer pieces during the same period. Moreover, this is the only Plus-designated Gem we have ever handled. At least one other MS65+ Full Head coin is confirmed in a PCGS holder, and a third is reported. However, the rarity of these pieces on the market makes the appearance of any example a noteworthy event.

The strike on this piece is superb for the issue, showing adequate head detail in addition to sharp stars and far above-average definition on the shield lines and rivets. The luster is vibrant with a warm sun-gold glow over each side, and there are no bothersome abrasions. A bold die crack on the reverse extends from the rim at 2 o'clock to the tip of the eagle's wing, but it appears to end abruptly there, and no other overt signs of die erosion are seen. Population: 14 in 65 (3 in 65+) Full Head, 8 finer (11/24).
