Description
1919-D Quarter, MS66 Full Head
An Extremely Rare Issue This Fine
A Registry-Grade Showpiece
1919-D 25C MS66 Full Head NGC. The 1919-D Standing Liberty
quarter is one of the biggest key dates in the series in high-grade
Full Head. Full Head pieces appear at auction slightly less often
than those of the 1919-S, and few Gem-quality coins have been
offered in recent years. At the Premium Gem level, Full Head 1919-D
quarters are extremely rare. We have offered such a coin on only
seven previous occasions in the past two-plus decades, only one of
which has been within the last 10 years. The present coin is the
first MS66 Full Head we have offered since our February 2012 Long
Beach Signature sale, where a PCGS Secure coin realized $80,500.
Before that, an NGC piece garnered $63,250 in our October 2006
Dallas Signature auction. The rarity of this issue in high-grade Full Head is well-established. In Standing Liberty Quarters, fourth edition, J.H. Cline calls the 1919-D "one of the most underrated dates and mintmarks in the whole series in MS65/67, Full Head." NGC and PCGS combined list only nine representatives at the Premium Gem Full Head level (1/17). Only one coin is finer, the MS67 Full Head piece from the Just Having Fun Collection, which realized nearly $150,000 in that August 2012 Stack's/Bowers auction.
The present coin is fresh to the market for this grade. Collectors familiar with the often deficient strike of the 1919-D quarter will appreciate the presence of only minor softness on the shield rivets and the leading edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing, with no other distinct weakness. Liberty's head shows separated leaves and a bold hairline. The date is razor-sharp, and the stars are well brought up. A loupe reveals some faint incompleteness along the left and right obverse border beads. The entire design is softly illuminated by satiny luster that shows a hint of pale champagne color, and careful scrutiny of the surfaces fails to uncover a single noteworthy abrasion. With only one finer piece reported, it is difficult to imagine a better opportunity for the advanced Registry Set collector to acquire this conditionally rare Denver issue in a showcase-worthy grade.(Registry values: N7079)
