1919-D Quarter, MS66 Full Head
Stunning Condition Census Example
Green Label Holder

1919-D 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. Ex: Nevada. The 1919-D represents one of the more challenging issues in the Standing Liberty quarter series in high grade Full Head. The Condition Census consists of fewer than a dozen pieces graded MS66 Full Head, with one coin in MS66+ Full Head and one piece -- the former Just Having Fun example -- in MS67 Full Head. Combined, PCGS and NGC list 13 coins in these grades, 10 of which are individually recorded with known provenances. The current piece, housed in a green label holder, is appearing here in its first documented auction appearance.

Within the Standing Liberty quarter series, the 1919-D boasts a relatively limited mintage of little more than 1.9 million coins, a sharp decline from the previous branch mint issues in the series. The decline in coinage at the branch mints came in the aftermath of World War-induced economic changes, with a slowing economy in rural areas serviced by the Denver and San Francisco Mints. Additionally, substantial coinages of quarter dollars in 1917 and 1918 continued to supply commercial needs for the denomination. The 1919-D very much came on the cusp of a severe dip in commercial demand for the quarter dollar denomination, which did not recover for several years. Indeed, after the 1919 production, Denver Mint quarters were not produced again until 1924.

The incredible rarity of high-end Full Head 1919-D quarters makes this issue one of the chief difficulties for Registry collectors. A plurality of the recorded auction appearances for MS66 Full Head coins in the last 20 years has been produced by a single coin, namely, the Pogue MS66+ Full Head piece, which Heritage recently sold in our August 2024 ANA Signature as part of the Noel Thomas Patton Collection for $132,000. Other top-tier examples of this issue have made only one auction appearance, or none. The present coin is in the lattermost group, never before having surfaced at auction.

Lovely, glistening Mint luster adorns this satiny Full Head rarity. Subtle iridescence in the margins complements overall warm champagne toning, with no distracting abrasions. The coin is also from an early die state, lacking the clash marks typically seen on other examples. Sharp definition spans Liberty's head, the shield lines and rivets, Liberty's toes, and the leading edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing. Housed in a Generation 3.1 green label holder. Population: 7 in 66 (1 in 66+) Full Head, 1 finer (9/24).(Registry values: N7079)
