1919-D Quarter, MS67 Full Head
The Sole Finest Full Head Known
Ex: Just Having Fun

1919-D 25C MS67 Full Head PCGS. Ex: Just Having Fun. In general discussions of the Standing Liberty quarter series, the 1919-D is usually allotted with the semikey dates, though when it comes to strike and condition rarities, the 1919-D becomes a more prominent fixture. This Denver issue is among the scarcest dates with Full Head sharpness, and all the more so in high grade Full Head. The famous strike rarities like the 1927-S and the overdate acknowledged, the 1919-D stands among the other most challenging Full Head acquisitions. It is slightly scarcer than the 1919-S in high grade Full Head, and can be similarly compared to the 1920-S. The 1926 branch mint issues are slightly scarcer than the 1919-D in Full Head overall, but the 1919-D is scarcer than either of them in MS66 and finer Full Head. This is where the two-fold rarity of the 1919-D emerges: strike rarity and conditional rarity within that strike rarity. The result is a date with merely a handful of Registry-grade coins known.
The certified population of Full Head Standing Liberty quarters tends to shift a lot. Crossovers and resubmissions are rampant in this series, and some coins continue to hide off the market and end up not reflected in confirmed census studies. As of today, we have can confirm the existence of only eight 1919-D quarters in MS66 or finer Full Head. Several of the MS66 Full Head pieces have made appearances at auction within the last decade. But the sole finest 1919-D in Full Head is the present MS67 coin, formerly of the Just Having Fun Collection. This piece last appeared at auction in 2012, in its namesake auction. Its appearance here in The Pizza Collection marks only its second known auction offering. This opportunity should not be passed up, as this coin would upgrade literally every Registry Set currently established...and leave no other collectors with a chance to gain equal footing, since this coin has no equal.
The coin exhibits astounding eye appeal. No immediately obvious clash marks or aggressive die lapping are apparent, and the satiny luster suggests an early or middle die state, which is as one would expect for the level of sharpness present in the devices. Liberty's head yields truly full definition, lacking nothing, and similar sharpness visits the date numerals, the stars, and the inner shield's vertical and horizontal lines. Only the two shield rivets at 7 o'clock on its perimeter exhibit weakness, which is hardly offensive. On the reverse, one enjoys equally sharp definition, with the troublesome leading edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing exhibiting bold detail. Neither side yields mentionable abrasions, and the wisps of olive-gold, russet, and amber toning over the fields and devices are original and eye-appealing. This is a coin as visually spectacular is it is technically unequaled. PCGS Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (3/26).
