Description

1919-S Quarter, MS66 Full Head
Strong Claims to Full Strike
Beautiful Registry-Grade Strike Rarity

1919-S 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. Sumptuous satiny luster covers surfaces that remain mostly untoned, save for a hint of peach. No abrasions of note are discernable, as is expected at the Premium Gem level. The strike is unusually and uniformly sharp. Central definition is especially strong, including the shield lines and rivets, the leading edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing, and the right-side reverse border stars. The date is also bold, straying from the often flat appearance of other Mint State 1919-S coins, and Liberty's head, while a touch soft on the hair, has a complete hairline and leaf sprigs.
The 1919-S contains the sixth lowest Full Head certifications, as a percentage of the overall population from both services, of any of the 38 issues that comprise the Standing Liberty quarter series, at 7.73%. Only the 1926-S (7.26%), 1919-D (7.03%), 1928-D (4.46%), 1926-D (1.97%), and 1927-S (0.87%) have a lower proportion of Full Head survivors. Even more elusive are examples with full strikes, as most of the coins that qualify for a Full Head designation are minutely weak in other areas. Ron Pope, in his 2004 survey of full strikes on Standing Liberty quarters, found that just 2% of the 174 examples of the 1919-S issue had full strikes. While that survey is old, it reveals a trend of rarity for well-struck 1919-S coins that remains formidable for collectors today. This example has strong claims to full strike status, though perhaps just slightly shy.
In addition to being at the top of the surviving population in terms of strike, this superlative specimen also approaches the pinnacle of quality when it comes to grade. PCGS has awarded the MS66 grade just 11 times, with NGC adding only three more certifications (3/26). Grades above this level have only been bestowed eight combined times in the 40 and 39 respective years that PCGS and NGC have been in business, comprising three in MS66+ at PCGS, one at NGC, and a pair of numerically finer certifications from either service. Therefore, not only is this coin unusually well struck for the issue, but it is also exceptionally well-preserved. The advanced Registry collector should not let this piece pass by. PCGS Population: 11 in 66 (3 in 66+), 2 finer (3/26).(Registry values: N7079)
