Description
1920-S Quarter, MS66 Full Head
Tied Finest Known, Ex: Just Having Fun
1920-S 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. Ex: Just Having Fun.
Brilliant light-silver surfaces remain untoned on both the obverse
and reverse, which are imbued with scintillating luster that
creates exceptional eye appeal. The lack of abrasions similarly
contributes to this coin's incredible appearance, as none of any
size can be found, even with a thorough examination, leading to
this example's Premium Gem assessment. This example is simply one of the rarest Standing Liberty quarters to achieve the Full Head designation. Only 9.63% of certifications from both services have achieved this feat, the ninth lowest among this 38-coin series. The present offering's definition between the face and hair detail, as well as the presence of the lines in the hair bun, show it deserves the designation. Furthermore, it also has some claim to full detail status, given its significant definition on the eagle's breast and outlines on all shield rivets. In 2004, numismatist Ron Pope studied the availability of Standing Liberty quarters with full details. Of the 266 examples of the 1920-S he examined, just 0.4% exhibited full details. While the 1918/7-S and a few issues at the end of the series contained no examples with Full Heads, the 1920-S was one of two non-overdate issues from the first half of the series with this low of a population of fully-detailed examples. While the Ron Pope survey is old by current census standards, it does serve to further emphasizing the rarity of well-struck examples of the 1920-S.
In addition to this piece's unusually strong strike, it is tied for finest known among Full Head coins. PCGS lists just nine in MS66 Full Head, with none finer, and NGC notes just seven at the same level, and has also not awarded a finer grade (2/26). This is the former Just Having Fun specimen -- one of the most famous Condition Census examples. We have previously handled a 1920-S as fine on only five prior occasions, which represented only three distinct examples. This is only the fourth Condition Census Full Head piece we have handled, and it represents an unsurpassable acquisition for the most advanced Registry collector. PCGS Population: 9 in 66, 0 finer (3/26).
