Description

1926-D Quarter, MS66 Full Head
Significant Strike Rarity
A Condition Census Example

1926-D 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. Silver surfaces contain faint hints of peripheral russet, though it is more prominent on the reverse. Luster is generous, and some orange-peeling is present in the fields. The leaves and significant rear hair detail are sharp -- more than enough to give this coin a Full Head on an issue when most come significantly weaker. Bowers simply states, "[t]aken as a whole the 1926-D quarter is the least satisfactory of all Standing Liberty issues from the standpoint of striking quality." This is supported by grading service data from both PCGS and NGC, but it is most afrontedly illustrated by simply perusing the Heritage Auction Archives, where the typical 1926-D is not only not a Full Head, but might rightly be call a dish head. Across the two services, just 1.97% of certifications have achieved the Full Head designation, second lowest among the series. While this coin does not reach fully struck status, it is still on the far upper end of the striking distribution. This excellent detail is fortuitously found on one of the finest surviving coins as well. PCGS Population: 14 in 66 (3 in 66+), 1 finer (3/26).(Registry values: N7079)
