Description
1926-S Quarter, MS66+ Full Head CAC
Fifth Lowest Full Head Population
The Sole Finest Known, Ex: Just Having Fun
1926-S 25C MS66+ Full Head PCGS. CAC. Ex: Just Having Fun.
The 1926-S is among the more difficult dates in the series in Full
Head. Among PCGS and NGC certifications combined, the 1926-S has
the fifth lowest percentage of Full Head certifications out of the
entire 38-coin Standing Liberty quarter series at 7.26%, behind
only the 1919-D (7.03%), 1928-D (4.46%), 1926-D (1.97%), and 1927-S
(0.87%) (excluding the overdate). The issue is often compared to
the 1926-D in terms of absolute Full Head survivorship, as the two
issues are similar, but the 1926-S is minutely more plentiful. Even
so, the finest examples known grade MS66 Full Head, with only the
current piece achieving the finest-known MS66+ Full Head status.
This coin is the premier example of this entire issue for Registry
Set collectors. The former Just Having Fun specimen has long been regarded as a top 1926-S example, all the way back to the year 2000, when it was part of the East Coast Collector Registry Set. The Just Having Fun pedigree, and now the Big Sky Collection pedigree, only serve to cement its unwavering status at the top of the known census.
The coin boasts tremendous luster, strike sharpness, and eye appeal. Liberty's hairline is strong and complete, and the three olive sprigs are bold. The sharpness also visits Liberty's toes and adjacent stars, and on the reverse, the right-side border stars and the leading edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing all exhibit nearly full definition. The shield rivets are weak, though this is as seen on virtually all known 1926-S quarters, even the sharpest of examples. The current coin certainly looks the part for its finest-known status. Brilliant silver surfaces contain hints of peach and small regions of medium-sand. PCGS Population: 13 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (3/26). CAC: 5 in 66, 0 finer (3/26).
