1926-S Quarter, MS66 Full Head
Beautiful CAC Example
Ex: Chicagoland

1926-S 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. CAC. Ex: Chicagoland Collection. The 1926-S is among the more challenging acquisitions in the Standing Liberty quarter series in high grade Full Head. The date has long been compared to the 1926-D in Full Head, as the issues share the same date and have similar Full Head populations. However, resubmissions and crossovers have affected the published population figures. PCGS and NGC combined report 127 Full Head 1926-S quarters and 141 Full Head 1926-D coins, suggesting the San Francisco coin is scarcer with the coveted designation. However, auction appearances of the two dates tell a different story. Since 1993, we have handled a Full Head 1926-S coin on 103 previous occasions, and a 1926-D on just 93 occasions, suggesting the Denver coin is scarcer. In practice, the populations of these two issues in Full Head are much more difficult to ascertain. For example, six of the 1926-D Full Head offerings in our archives are the same MS67 Full Head piece appearing multiple times.
Where, then, does the current MS66 Full Head 1926-S fit in the survivorship? While the 1926-D is minutely scarcer in Full Head, the 1926-S is unknown in MS67 Full Head, thus the current MS66 Full Head coin is among the finest examples known. We have previously handled an MS66 Full Head 1926-S on 13 occasions, including reappearances of some pieces. Of those offerings, only three occurred within the last decade. The current coin is, functionally, fresh to the modern market, having last appeared at auction some 15 years ago. It represents a top-tier option for the Registry collector that most modern series specialists have not had an opportunity to acquire.
This piece displays frosty, pristine mint luster devoid of any significant abrasions. Even the ridge of Liberty's leg is clean, which is rarely seen on any Standing Liberty quarter in MS66. CAC endorsement is well deserved. Much of each side displays light champagne color, while a daub of blue and violet toning over the L in LIBERTY serves as a ready pedigree marker. The strike completes Liberty's head detail, while the shield rivets and leading edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing exhibit slight softness as usual. The eye appeal of this coin is outstanding. PCGS Population: 12 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (3/26).
