Description
1927-S Quarter, MS64 Full Head
Key to the Series With Full Head Details
Few Known This Fine
1927-S 25C MS64 Full Head PCGS. CAC. The opportunity to bid
on a Full Head 1927-S Standing Liberty quarter rarely comes along,
and specialists are advised to take maximum advantage of the
present offering. PCGS has awarded the Full Head designation to
1927-S quarters just 25 times, and NGC adds only 21 more. This
represents a mere 0.87% of certifications, the lowest in the
series. This is particularly notable considering 30.38% of the
certifications from series as a whole don the Full Head
designation, underscoring the extreme importance of this specimen.
Of these 46 combined Full Head certifications, just 12 received an
MS64 evaluation, and our current census of finer Full Head pieces
documents just eight such coins. Considering PCGS and NGC combined
report 14 finer Full Head specimens, some duplication inflates the
published certification figures. Thus, there may be fewer than 12
MS64 Full Heads known, once possible crossovers and regrades are
taken into account. As a result, the 1927-S in Full Head represents
one of the two most difficult acquisitions for advanced Registry
collectors, rivaled only by the overdate, and possibly surpassing
it in the absolute sense. The reason for the unusually weak strike on the quarters of this issue stems to the combination of the design itself being difficult to strike up and the quality control at the San Francisco Mint during the 1920s. And given that, it is impressive that the current not only achieves a Full Head designation, but does so decisively. A sharp temple and hairline complements bold toes and stars on the obverse, and the right-side border stars on the reverse are similarly sharp. Only the shield rivets are noticeably weak, which is unavoidable on this issue -- all known examples are weak on the shield rivets. Fully lustrous surfaces shimmer with satiny brilliance and delicate peripheral iridescence. PCGS Population: 10 in 64, 7 finer (2/26). CAC: 1 in 64, 3 finer (2/26).
